After 9/11, the intertwining threads of lace in his Lace series paintings began to remind Zakanitch of a great web of life and a metaphor for mending. But even before that, he was drawn to the textile for its intricate patterns and evocations of his childhood: “That’s what I was raised with—my grandmother and my mother and my aunt crocheting, making lace. It was on every piece of furniture.”
