In 2001, Zakanitch spent the summer at Soaring Gardens Artists’ Retreat in Pennsylvania. He admired the crows outside his rustic studio: “People don’t like crows. I happen to really like crows.” Zakanitch is drawn to the nostalgia of silhouette art and his crows stand out against floral surfaces: “There is something about the humaneness of silhouettes. Way back in early America, they would cut a little silhouette and send it to their loved one. And I thought, ‘I want to do some silhouettes.’ It was the tenderness of it.”
