Zakanitch painted this tureen after a trip to the Greek islands, where he was inspired by the ancient art and history: Im intrigued by Sappho. Shes this brilliant poet There was something beautiful about that I thought the coloration was just beautiful. Sappho was an archaic Greek poet best known for her lyric poems about love. The symmetry of the imaginary tureen lends Sappho the appearance of the Roman god Janus, who is usually depicted as having two faces, one looking to the future and one to the past.
