Zakanitch’s platters and tureens are two examples of the artist creating ornamentation inspired by everyday objects that are highly decorative. But he was also attracted to the domestic associations of these household objects: “The undercurrent of that is about nurturing, which is about feeding, so that’s where the Tureen series comes in. That’s soup, you know. Let’s break bread… and that’s when all the work starts becoming about compassion, and empathy, and caring. It’s a whole shift, very slowly… but it moves a long way from the beginning.”
