Artist Tour: Adela Antoinette and Maya Vera
Self-portraits by Adela Antoinette and Maya Vera are on view in The World of Frida; their artworks emulate Kahlo in very different ways. Join the artists in the galleries for a discussion about how Kahlo’s work influenced them.
Frida Kahlo once said, “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” In recreating the self-portraits of historic artists through her mastery of theatrical make-up and props, Antoinette comes to inhabit them and experience surprising emotional connections. Vera’s performance-based photographs explore her ethnicity and identity as a Mexican-American woman. Her characters exploit viewers’ perceptions of the female body in unexpected and uncomfortable ways.
