Film Screening with Sky Hopinka
The HRM presents a screening of maɬni – towards the ocean, towards the shore (2020), an experimental feature exploring the Chinookan origin of death myth from the Pacific Northwest. Following the 80-minute screening, filmmaker and visual artist Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) will discuss the film in a Q&A. In 2022, Hopinka received a MacArthur ‘Genius Grant’ Fellowship for his work, which blends poetry, film, and Indigenous perspectivism to explore the intersections of language and landscape. Capacity is limited; advance reservation recommended.
“Meditative and beautifully photographed, Hopinka’s film is a lush exploration of afterlife, rebirth, and the place in-between.” —SFFILM Festival
“Hopinka subtly inverts the tropes of the ethnographic documentary to depict indigenous life from an indigenous perspective.” —Cayley James, Cinema Scope
