Gift of Miss Susan D. Bliss, 1937

The silhouette and bold decoration of this elegant coat take inspiration from Parisian high fashion at the start of the 1920s. The floral motif of the gilt embroidery reflects the early 20th-century craze for cultivating chrysanthemums and entering them in contests. The New York City fashion house Dunstan was owned and operated by dressmaker Alice M. Dunstan (c. 1854-1927). She and her husband James came to New York from England in 1887 and by 1891 she was operating a business under her own name at East 30th Street.
