Zakanitch’s Hanging Gardens series broke new ground for his ornamentation in gouache; at the same time it seems to come full circle to his Pattern and Decoration roots. He contains his flowers in grids and then opens a field to them for their repeating dancing forms. Of making patterns today, he says: “It isn’t an issue that even enters my mind anymore. If I do or don’t, it’s all part of me. If I have to go back there, and someone says, ‘Oh, it’s all about pattern,’ I say, ‘Good.’ That’s what it’s about. But….”
