Zakanitch painted the backgrounds of his paintings in the Garden of Ordinary Miracles to resemble brown Kraft paper to match his creative inspiration: “The first image I did was on brown wrapping paper. I had a little white gouache, for some reason, and I washed this little white image on this brown paper. And then I said, ‘Wow, is that a beautiful surface? The way it becomes gossamer… the brown is kind of coming through.’ I put a little more color in it and made it into a little flower. And then I thought, ‘Wouldn’t that be something if it were eight-feet tall?’”
