Hudson River Museum Elects James McElhinney to its Board of Trustees

YONKERS, NY, April 22, 2024—The Hudson River Museum announces the election of James McElhinney to its Board of Trustees, accepting the recommendation of the Nominating committee co-chaired by Trustees William Mascetta and Susan Fraysse Russ. He was elected by unanimous vote at the April 13, 2024 board meeting and will serve from May 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027.

James McElhinney is a visual artist, published author, and educator. Inspired by historical expeditionary artists and naturalists such as William Guy Wall, John-James Audubon, Jacques-Gérard Milbert, Seth Eastman, and Marianne North, James McElhinney’s artworks explore American rivers such as the Hudson, Schuylkill, and Rio Grande, with new projects focused on other American waterways now under development.

James is the author of numerous essays, articles, and six books on art, including the Sketchbook Traveler series produced by Schiffer Publishing. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University School of Art, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art of Temple University. He is also an alumnus of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. McElhinney is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and an artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He is a member of the Master Artist Council of the Arthur Miller Foundation, and taught for many years at institutions of higher learning such as Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York.

James McElhinney stated, “I am excited to serve on the Board of Trustees of Hudson River Museum because of its public-facing educational mission to interpret the interconnectedness of science, history, and art, within a culturally vibrant and diverse community. I am especially eager to contribute to the HRM as a welcoming space where people of all backgrounds feel valued and can come together.”

His recent exhibitions include James McElhinney: Discover the Hudson Anew, at the Hudson River Museum (2019–20), and the installation O.T.W. On the Water: The Schuylkill River at Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia (2018–20). McElhinney’s artwork is represented by Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where a solo exhibition of his recent nocturnes will open on June 14, 2024.

Thomas D’Auria, Chair of the HRM Board of Trustees, stated, “On behalf of the HRM’s Board of Trustees, I extend a very warm welcome to James McElhinney. His impressive and well-earned artistic career, keen understanding of museums and the cultural sector, and his genuine interest in our audiences will be invaluable to help to guide the vision and mission of the Hudson River Museum.”
